Common questions about the Sprintshift Transmission Service

So what exactly is a Sprintshift Transmission?

The Sprintshift transmission is essentially a 6-speed manual transmission, with additional electrical and hydraulic components added to operate the clutch and gear shift mechanism.

First introduced in the early 2000s, the Sprintshift transmission was designed to bridge the gap between the strengths of a manual gearbox, and the shortcomings of automatic gearboxes.

It’s mostly found on Mercedes Sprinter vans from 2000-2006. The easiest way to spot a vehicle with the Sprintshift is by the gearstick. If it has A – N – R on it, then it is a Sprintshift.

Over time, the gear oil within a Sprintshift transmission degrades due to wear and heat.

But more critically, the hydraulic fluid, which runs seperately through the shift valves, pump, clutch etc, has a tendency to leak or allow air bubbles into the system.

When a Sprintshift transmission experiences low hydraulic pressure, the vehicle typically won’t be driveable and a tow-truck will be required. So preventative maintenance is important.

The Sprintshift transmission service addresses both of these symptoms by replacing the gear oil and flushing the hydraulic fluid.

Then finally we perform the re-learning procedures for the clutch and gearshift mechanisms using Mercedes Diagnostic equipment.

100,000km or every few years is the max interval that Eurostar recommends between Sprintshift transmission services.

Performing regular Sprintshift transmission services is the best way to promote reliability and optimal shifting performance for your Sprinter.

Sprintshift transmissions are 20+ years old now and most of them slowly weep hydraulic fluid. It’s very important to service them before hydrualic low pressure faults occur, as this often leaves the vehicle stranded.

For Sprintshift transmissions that are showing signs of poor shifting, you may get a performance improvement with a Sprintshift service. So it’s worth performing a service before considering transmission replacement or repair.

Most owners require just regular Sprintshift servicing to maintain reliability, however there are parts that can require replacement.

Hydraulic Pump – the pumps can wear out over time and require replacement.

Accumulator – the pressure accumulator works with the pump to maintain hydraulic pressure, these can faul and result in low pressure.

Clutch – the clutch is mechanically the same as the manual transmission clutch, and it will wear out over time. Typically over 200-300,000km.

Clutch position sensor – becaust the clutch is electrically controlled and hydraulically actuated, there is a position sensor of the clucth slave cylinder. This sensor is crucial to the smooth operation of the transmission and can fail over time or due to contamination of worn clutch debris.
